Model identification

How to identify your iPhone and its case before checking fit

The short answer

Identify two things: the full iPhone model and the exact case product. A phone’s model number and a case’s SKU are different identifiers; you need both when an older case’s fit is unclear.

Find the phone’s model number

Open Settings, then General, then About. Apple explains that the value beside Model Number initially shows the part number; tap it to reveal the model number. Match that number to Apple’s identification page linked below. You do not need to share your serial number or IMEI to use this checker.

Keep the full model name

Record suffixes such as Plus, Pro, Pro Max, mini or e. For an SE, establish the generation and year. Search results that shorten a name can combine unrelated case sizes; choose the complete model shown by Apple when using the checker.

Find the case identifier

Look for a SKU or item number on the packaging, receipt, order details or manufacturer’s product page. A series name such as “Defender” is not a unique identifier. Keep the colour, selected device and item number together; a page may offer several distinct products.

If the phone cannot be opened in Settings

Apple’s model-number instructions include device-specific locations on the hardware. Use those instructions for your model, then match the number against Apple’s identification list. Avoid guessing the phone solely from its camera count or apparent screen size.

If the case cannot be identified

Leave its fit unverified. Ask the maker to identify it from the information you have, or use a case explicitly listed for your phone. A phone that can be pressed into an unknown case has not thereby passed a fit or protection test.
